Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves
Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves is located in Mutou Valley in the middle of the Flaming Mountains,50 kilometers to the east of Turpan city.“Bezeklik”means “a place with beautiful decoration”.About 83 Caves remain now and in about 40 of them there are murals.The caves,dating back to the time of the Kingdom of Jushi Gaochang (400-640 AD) and the following time,were an important center for Buddhist worship.Now most of well-preserved wall paintings were of those in the time of Gaochang Uygur Kingdom,and they are viewed as “the most important representative treasure of the Uygur Buddhist arts that were the largest in number and most well preserved.”
